Chapter Six–Jericho

Standing at the edge of the cellar’s yawning darkness, I felt a pressure building in my chest, a weight so thick it was almost physical. Even without stepping down into the shadows, I knew we were getting close. My stomach was growing sicker by the minute.

The air was frigid, dense with something far more than cold—it was alive, oppressive, and threaded with a malice that reached into the marrow of my bones.

I took a deep breath, steadying myself, and glanced back at the team. Macie was watching me, her expression somewhere between worry and resolve, and for a moment, my heart twisted. I was still trying to get over her, to move forward, but there she was, close enough that I could see the way she drew her bottom lip between her teeth. And just behind her was Chris, barely an inch away, with his quiet, steady presence that I’d once found comforting. Now, it was a reminder of something I’d lost.

Still, this wasn’t the time to let old feelings cloud my focus. There were things here darker than heartbreak, and I needed every bit of clarity I could muster. It felt as if we were walking into a space that hadn’t seen light—or warmth—in centuries. As I continued to descend, the shadows seemed to deepen, pooling at my feet, each step pulling me further into a place that was less and less of this world.

The walls themselves seemed to hold secrets, to pulse with the faint echoes of things I could only begin to understand. It was like the house had a memory—a dark, rotting memory it refused to forget. Aware of the team just behind me, I murmured a quiet warning.

“Stay close,” I said, my voice low, each word sinking into the silence like a stone into still water. “And if you feel anything, anything at all, say it.”

Cassidy was the first to respond, her voice barely a whisper. “Jesus! It’s colder here than last time.”

“Feels like we’re walking into a freezer,” Midas muttered, rubbing his hands together, though he was focused, his gaze sharp. His light cut through the dark, but even it seemed muted, as if the shadows were eating up the beam, swallowing it before it could do any real good.

We moved farther in, the temperature dropping with every step, and I felt a prickle of awareness along my skin.

My healing abilities had always been more than just the laying on of hands—they let me sense energy too, both the good and the bad. And right now, I was surrounded by bad. Really bad.

Every inch of me wanted to turn around, but I’d come here to do a job, and this time it wasn’t just about finding answers. It was about setting something free. All of my soul screamed DEMON but I had to get proof. I had to be able to stand by that assessment and then take action.

Take action? Well, I wasn’t exactly pure anymore. Macie and I…well, at least it was over now.
